The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) is the only NATO Education & Training Facility (NETF) dedicated to the maritime domain. Officially established in 2008, is quality-assurance unconditionally accredited by Allied Command Transformation. Funded by Greece and multinationally manned, the Centre is located at the north-west of Crete, at the Akrotiri peninsula, in the northern area of Souda Bay, near the city of Chania, inside Hellenic Navy’s Souda Naval Base.

My vision is to further develop the concept of NMIOTC as a hub for the maritime dimension of projecting stability. To this end, we are undertaking a series of mid and long-term initiatives, such as establishing new individual and collective training products.

Tailored Training to ITS CARABINIERE Boarding Team
On Friday, November 14th, 2025, NMIOTC provided one day of Tailored Training to a 13-member Boarding Team of ITS Carabiniere aiming at enhancing their Close Quarter Combat skills and VBSS capacity.
Visit by H.E. the Ambassador of Spain to Greece
On Friday, November 14th, 2025, NMIOTC was honoured to receive at its premises His Excellency the Ambassador of Spain to the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Jorge Domecq Fernández, accompanied by the Defence Attaché, Captain Ricardo Valdés Fernández, in the context of H.E. visit to military authorities in the region. During the visit, he was thoroughly briefed about the Centre’s mission, role and training capabilities, including recent tailored trainings provided to Spanish Navy Frigates’ boarding teams. NMIOTC hosted also a similar briefing by the Souda Naval Base Commander.
Course 32000 “MIO in Maritime Oil and Gas Assets”
From 10th to 14th of November 2025, NMIOTC conducted the 1st iteration of Course 32000 “MIO in Maritime Oil and Gas Assets”. The aim of this course is to train security and MIO planners to understand and assess security threats to offshore oil and gas assets and to support the effective planning of MIO, considering operational, technical and safety characteristics of oil and gas assets while applying advanced security assessment methodologies. The course was attended and successfully completed by sixteen (16) trainees coming from five (5) Nations (Belgium, Greece, Malta, Romania and USA).
