The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) is the only NATO Education & Training Facility (NETF) dedicated to the maritime domain. Officially established in 2008, is quality-assurance unconditionally accredited by Allied Command Transformation. Funded by Greece and multinationally manned, the Centre is located at the north-west of Crete, at the Akrotiri peninsula, in the northern area of Souda Bay, near the city of Chania, inside Hellenic Navy’s Souda Naval Base.

My vision is to further develop the concept of NMIOTC as a hub for the maritime dimension of projecting stability. To this end, we are undertaking a series of mid and long-term initiatives, such as establishing new individual and collective training products.

U.S. Congress STAFFDEL visited NMIOTC
On Thursday, November 13th, 2025, an eight-member U.S. Congress Staff Delegation (STAFFDEL), led by Ms Isidora Petropoulou, from the A7 Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, visited the NATO Maritime Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC), where they were received by the NMIOTC Commandant and the Souda Naval Base Commander. During the visit, the STAFFDEL members were thoroughly briefed about the mission, role, activities & capabilities of the Centre, and the Souda Naval Base as well, and actively participated in a Q&A session with Commandant NMIOTC.
Course 14000 “Maritime IED Disposal (M-IEDD)”
From 20th to 24th October 2025, the Course 14000 “Maritime IED Disposal (M-IEDD)” was conducted at NMIOTC’s premises. The aim of this course was to educate and train EOD personnel to competently undertake IEDD Operations on-board vessels and other Maritime Infrastructure in support of C-IED and related operations. The training covered the subject concepts; philosophy, principles, equipment, ship insertion and Maritime focused IEDD methodologies, as well as best practices in the Maritime environment. Fifteen (15) trainees from three (3) countries (Canada, Greece and United Kingdom) and four (4) augmenters from USA Army and Hellenic Police Bomb Squad, participated in the
Course 17000 “Train the Trainers – Technical Instructor”
From 13th to 24th October 2025 the Course 17000 was conducted through a combination Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) and in-person attendance at NMIOTC’s premises. The aim of the course was to provide a comprehensive training package which included theoretical and practical presentation of educational knowledge to enhance the participants’ presentation and teaching skills. Ten (10) trainees from five (5) countries (Bahrain, Greece, Italy, Poland and USA) participated in the course.
