The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) is the only NATO Education & Training Facility (NETF) dedicated to the maritime domain. Officially established in 2008, is quality-assurance unconditionally accredited by Allied Command Transformation. Funded by Greece and multinationally manned, the Centre is located at the north-west of Crete, at the Akrotiri peninsula, in the northern area of Souda Bay, near the city of Chania, inside Hellenic Navy’s Souda Naval Base.

My vision is to further develop the concept of NMIOTC as a hub for the maritime dimension of projecting stability. To this end, we are undertaking a series of mid and long-term initiatives, such as establishing new individual and collective training products.

NMIOTC instructor in SOFCOM Medical Instructor Development Course
From 14 to 18 April 2025, NMIOTC supported the SOF “Medical Instructor Development and Tactical Combat Casualty Care Instructor Course” with one (1) Subject Matter Expert (SME) as an instructor. The course was conducted in Riga, Latvia, and led by the Allied Special Operations Forces Command (NATO SOFCOM)’s Medical Mobile Training Team. The training aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills related to SOF medical training, including requirements analysis, instructional design, skill acquisition in non-permissive environments, scenario-based training, and various debriefing techniques critical for SOF medical personnel. FGS Bayern Force Protection Team Receive Tailored Training
From 8th to 11th April 2025, NMIOTC delivered a tailored training package to FGS Bayern’s Force Protection Team in various VBSS areas, including Tactical Movement Inside/Outside of Coastal Critical Sites and Tactical Sweep. The trainees utilized a variety of the Centre’s outdoor training facilities, varying from the Containers Stack to the Coastal Urban Training Area.
Course 29000 “Detection and Identification of WMD (CBRN Materials) in Maritime Interdiction”
From 7th to 11th of April 2025, the Course 29000 “Detection and Identification of WMD (CBRN Materials) in Maritime Interdiction” was successfully conducted at the NMIOTC premises. Seventeen (17) trainees coming from seven (7) NATO and Partner Nations (Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Netherlands and Poland) attended the course. Subject Matter Experts from US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Institute for Maritime Operations Training (IMAF) and also Austrian and Finnish Army, supported the course as augmenters and instructors.
