The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) is the only NATO Education & Training Facility (NETF) dedicated to the maritime domain. Officially established in 2008, is quality-assurance unconditionally accredited by Allied Command Transformation. Funded by Greece and multinationally manned, the Centre is located at the north-west of Crete, at the Akrotiri peninsula, in the northern area of Souda Bay, near the city of Chania, inside Hellenic Navy’s Souda Naval Base.

My vision is to further develop the concept of NMIOTC as a hub for the maritime dimension of projecting stability. To this end, we are undertaking a series of mid and long-term initiatives, such as establishing new individual and collective training products.

Training of German Navy Boarding Team MOC 1
From 29th of September until 10th of October 2025, a German Navy Boarding Team conducted a tailored training that included theoretical and practical aspects in order to improve trainees’ skills and performance in NATO Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) in Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) as well as in Close Quarter Combat (CQC). Thirteen (13) members of the German Navy participated in the training.
Tailored Training delivered to ESPS Victoria Boarding Team
Based on a request from the Spanish Navy Frigate ESPS VICTORIA, on October 3rd, 2025, NMIOTC delivered one-day Tailored Training to a 18-member Boarding Team, aiming at improving VBSS capacity in Maritime Interdiction Operations as well as Close Quarter Combat skills. On the occasion of the training, NMIOTC Commandant had an office call from the C.O. of ESPS Victoria, Commander Jorge Fernadez De Navarrete Bedoya, to discuss future opportunities for VBSS training of Spanish ships participating in Operation ATALANTA.
21st Allied Cryptographic Task Force (ACTF) Meeting
From 30th of September to 3rd of October 2025, the 21st Allied Cryptographic Task Force (ACTF) Meeting, led by Alliance Strategic Commands, took place at the NMIOTC premises. Seventy one (71) participants from twenty two (22) Allied Nations attended the event. The aim of the meeting was to discuss cryptographic modernization and transformation issues, to plan for operational contingencies and mitigation measures in the wider context of cryptographic risk management and additionally, to provide a forum for the NATO Commands to engage with NATO nations on the operational aspects of cryptographic situation awareness.
