The NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) is the only NATO Education & Training Facility (NETF) dedicated to the maritime domain. Officially established in 2008, is quality-assurance unconditionally accredited by Allied Command Transformation. Funded by Greece and multinationally manned, the Centre is located at the north-west of Crete, at the Akrotiri peninsula, in the northern area of Souda Bay, near the city of Chania, inside Hellenic Navy’s Souda Naval Base.

Belgian Marine Infantry Corps trained at NMIOTC

From 7 to 18 July 2025, NMIOTC provided a tailored Maritime Interdiction Operations training, basically comprised of modules from NMIOTC Courses 2000 and 3000 (“Boarding Team Theoretical Issues” and “Boarding Team Practical Issues”), to an eight (8) – member team of the Belgian Armed Forces Marine Infantry Corps. The trainees had the privilege to be the first team trained on the new NMIOTC Training Platform “AXIOS”.

Course 28000 – “Radiological Search in Maritime Environment”

From 14th to 18th of July 2025, the Resident Course 28000 “Radiological Search in Maritime Environment” was conducted at the NMIOTC premises, utilizing a wide range of the Centre’s training facilities. Twenty-two (22) participants and twelve (12) Subject Matter Experts (SME) from eight (8) NATO nations (Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania, United Kingdom and USA) took part in the course. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) supported the course with SMEs, equipment and ‘know-how’.

Course 7000 Completed

From 7th to 11th of July 2025 the Resident Course 7000 “Maritime Interdiction Operations in Support to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery at Sea Operations” was conducted at the NMIOTC premises. This Course included theoretical and practical training for military personnel in terms of planning and execution of Operations aimed at fighting against piracy & armed robbery at sea. In total, twelve (12) participants from four (4) Nations (Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and USA) successfully completed the Course.
