Online Workshop on Digital Transformation in MIO & MDO
On November 24th, 2025, NMIOTC concluded a pilot online workshop titled “Digital Transformation in Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) and Multi-Domain Operations (MDO)”.
The workshop brought together experts and stakeholders from across the NATO enterprise to examine how emerging digital technologies – including artificial intelligence (AI), intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), cyber defense, and autonomous systems – are reshaping Maritime Interdiction Operations and influencing the broader multi-domain operational environment.
NMIOTC delivered key presentations outlining the evolving links between Digital Transformation, MIO, and MDO, with particular emphasis on enhancing interoperability, situational awareness, and decision-making superiority in maritime operations.
Notable contributions included:
Flavius-Petru Blajan, Staff Officer for Digital Transformation, NATO SHAPE Cyberspace Directorate J6 Cyberspace Division, who presented SHAPE’s perspective on cyberspace support to digital transformation, highlighting the role of the NATO Digital Backbone.
Mr. Ioanis Pantazis, Discipline Development Office & Coherence Officer, NCI Academy, who provided an overview of the current state of digital education and training relevant to maritime operations.
Professor Sam Medhat, Chief Executive of the Institute of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, who introduced a digital transformation framework aimed at shifting maritime interdiction from reactive patrols to predictive approaches.
Participants engaged in constructive discussions that helped refine conceptual directions and shared priorities for the future of digital integration in maritime interdiction.
NMIOTC expresses its appreciation to all speakers and participants for their valuable contributions and looks forward to continuing collaboration as work progresses on the broader digital transformation effort within the maritime domain.
